Getting WritePair running.

What you need

• A recent version of Chrome on Windows 10/11, macOS 13 or later, Linux, or ChromeOS. WritePair is not available on Chrome for Android or iOS, because those don't ship the built-in AI.
• About 22 GB of free disk space for the one-time model install. Chrome manages this space, and reclaims it if you stop using the models.
• A graphics card with more than 4 GB of memory — or a newer Chrome that can run the model on your CPU instead.

WritePair shows you exactly where you stand: the readiness panel at the top of Settings probes each on-device model and reports whether it is ready, downloading, or unsupported on your machine.

The one-time model download

The first time you use an action, Chrome downloads the model it needs — from Google, not from us. You'll see a "Downloading model…" progress state in the result card while it happens. Once it's done:

• Everything runs locally, and works offline.
• Nothing is downloaded again for that model.
• Translation is the exception, in a small way: each language pair downloads once, on demand, the first time you translate between those two languages.

If you'd rather not wait the first time you need it, Settings has a Download now button that warms the models up ahead of time.

A model says "Not supported". What now?

Not every device can run every model, and that's fine — WritePair is built for it.

• Actions still work. Anything marked "Not supported" falls back to the core model automatically, so rewriting, proofreading, expanding, shortening and the rest keep going.
• Translate is the one exception. It never silently falls back, because a general-purpose model's translation isn't good enough to pass off as a translation. If a language pair isn't available, WritePair tells you instead of guessing.
• If your device can't run the built-in AI at all, the writing features pause — but Settings, shortcuts and your history keep working, and the features come back the moment your device qualifies.

Common questions

Is it really free?

The free plan is genuinely free and genuinely unlimited: Rewrite, Proofread, Translate and Summary, as often as you like, with no account, no API key and no credit counter. Because the model runs on your machine there is no inference bill to pass on to you — so there is nothing to meter, and there are no usage limits on any plan.

Will you start counting my usage?

No. We can't, and we won't. The model runs on your hardware, so your usage costs us nothing — there is no bill for us to ration. What Pro sells is features, never allowance. Even on the free plan, nothing you do is counted.

Do I need an account to buy Pro?

No account to create, and no password. Payment is handled by Paddle, our merchant of record. To turn Pro on you sign in with the email you paid with — a one-time link — and that is what carries Pro to your other devices. That email is all we ever learn; your name and card details stay with Paddle.

Where does my text go?

Nowhere. The part of WritePair that runs on the pages where you type has no network path out at all — your drafts, your selections, the page around you and your email threads are never uploaded. The privacy policy explains the full picture, including the small non-content operational layer the extension's own settings pages use.

Why does it ask for access to every site?

Because you write everywhere. The toolbar has to be able to appear in, read from, and write back to whatever text field you're actually using, and there's no way to know in advance which sites those will be. That access is used only for the field you invoke it in, and all the work happens locally. You can mute WritePair on any site from the toolbar's ⋯ menu or from Settings.

Does it work offline?

After the one-time model download, yes.

Can I change the keyboard shortcuts?

Every action has one, and you can rebind all of them on the Shortcuts screen. There's also a shortcut that summons the toolbar onto your current selection, which is handy if you've set the toolbar to appear only when asked.

Does it work on text I'm only reading?

Yes — select any text on any page and you'll get Translate plus the four insight actions (Summary, Key Points, List, Table). Since there's nothing to write back to, the result card offers Copy instead of Replace.

What about the inline autocomplete?

Ghost-text autocomplete is experimental and off by default. Turn it on in Settings if you want to try it: as you type, it suggests the rest of the sentence — Tab accepts, Esc dismisses.
